The South African Human Rights Commission is appealing for calm in the Free State town of Senekal where EFF and ANC members were protesting alongside people from lobby group AfriForum and local farmers.

Racial tensions have been high in Senekal since the murder of local farm manager Brendin Horner earlier this month.

Meanwhile, EFF leader Julius Malema mobilised his followers, saying they were in Senekal to protect democracy and the Constitution in the wake of the violence.

Senekal was painted red with members of the EFF dominating the space just outside court.
